Summer Safety
6/19/2024 (Permalink)
Summer is the time for many fun activities including barbecues, and fireworks.
Each year, an average of 230 people are injured badly enough to require medical treatment after firework-related incidents, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. In addition to causing injury, fireworks are also responsible for thousands of house fires each year with millions of dollars in property damage.
- Leave fireworks to the professionals. Do not use consumer fireworks.
- The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals.
- After the firework display, children should never pick up fireworks that may be left over, they may still be active.
- Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear.
- Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire.
There is nothing like firing up the grill during the summer.
"Each year an average of 8,900 home fires are caused by grilling, and close to half of all injuries involving grills are due to thermal burns. While nearly half of the people who grill do it year-round, July is the peak month for grill fires followed by May, June and August."
As we hit mid July, peak grill time, a simple backyard barbecue can become dangerous if safety precautions aren't considered. SERVPRO of Beverly wants you to have an enjoyable and safe summer. Consider the following tips to make sure your summer celebrations are disaster-free!
SAFETY TIPS
- Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
- The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.
- Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
- Never leave your grill unattended.
- Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
CHARCOAL GRILLS
- There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
- If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
- Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
- There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
- When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a mineral fiber that occurs in rock and soil.
Where can asbestos be found?
Because of its fiber strength and heat resistance asbestos has been used in a variety of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire retardant. Asbestos has also been used in a wide range of manufactured goods, mostly in building materials (roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products, and asbestos cement products), friction products (automobile clutch, brake, and transmission parts), heat-resistant fabrics, packaging, gaskets, and coatings.
Where asbestos may be found:
- Attic and wall insulation produced containing vermiculite.
- Vinyl floor tiles and the backing on vinyl sheet flooring and adhesives
- Roofing and siding shingles
- Textured paint and patching compounds used on walls and ceilings
- Walls and floors around wood-burning stoves protected with asbestos paper, millboard, or cement sheets
- Hot water and steam pipes coated with asbestos material or covered with an asbestos blanket or tape
- Oil and coal furnaces and door gaskets with asbestos insulation
- Heat-resistant fabrics
- Automobile clutches and brakes
How can you be exposed to asbestos?
Asbestos fibers may be released into the air by the disturbance of asbestos-containing material during product use, demolition work, building or home maintenance, repair, and remodeling. In general, exposure may occur only when the asbestos-containing material is disturbed or damaged in some way to release particles and fibers into the air.
Advice from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection:
"If asbestos containing material is in good condition, the best thing you can do is leave it alone."
Unfortunately, the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards says removal of some amount of building materials in necessary in a high percentage of our jobs due to contamination.
Possible Health Risks
Three of the major health effects associated with asbestos exposure are:
- lung cancer
- mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that is found in the thin lining of the lung, chest and the abdomen and heart
- asbestosis, a serious progressive, long-term, non-cancer disease of the lungs
What does that mean for you when working with us?
If we are removing any amount of building materials from your home, said building material need to be tested for asbestos levels before the materials are removed from your home.
What does this mean for your project?
It means we are "on hold" with your project temporarily. We contact an Industrial Hygienist, who will contact you, our customer, to come to your home to perform the appropriate testing. The Industrial Hygienist will take samples of the material we are looking to remove, and they are sent to a local lab. The turnaround time for results are about 2-3 business days and if there is any in the materials, an outside asbestos abatement company needs to be brought in who will provide an estimate for you (and your insurance company) and will ultimately perform the asbestos abatement.
The reasons for the multi steps are simple:
- if we skip this step, the fine from the MA DEP reaches into the thousands of dollars.
- If say a saw is used on drywall or joint compound to remove the drywall, and your furnace is turned on, this asbestos articulates now become airborne and spread like seeds of a dandelion in a light breeze. You are now breathing in this dust, and the dust is airborne leading to more dangerous absorption into your lungs.
So, when you’re dealing with an emergency that requires dealing with the removal of questionable building materials and insulation use the company in your community who cares what happens to you and yours. We believe in staying safe and keeping you and your family safe from the unseen hazards of problematic material removal. We will help deal with getting in contact with the correct agencies to test and correctly remove asbestos containing material. Spring Can Deliver Severe Surprises
4/29/2022 (Permalink)
As we saw in the last week of March of this year, the Northshore of Massachusetts can bring some crazy fluctuations of weather and temperatures. Spring usually brings warmer weather, longer days, and a much-anticipated break from winter it can also bring a very real threat of severe weather. We happen to be lucky where our weather doesn’t reflect the South’s, where they have a “Tornado Alley” during the spring weather, but due to the frequent change in cold and warm temperatures in spring in the New England area there is an elevated risk for severe weather. The weather can Range from flooding rains, thunderstorms, and sometimes tornadoes. Spring weather can be unpredictable at best and extremely dangerous at worst.
SERVPRO of Beverly/ Cape Ann is always ready to help!
When you give some thought to the types of hazards a spring storm could produce, you can begin to plan for the safety of your family as well as your home or business depending on where you live. here are some of the ways a spring storm might damage your home or business:
Water damage:
Can be caused by flooding from melting snow, the state of your foundation, washouts from coastal storms, frozen pipes that burst, sump pumps that fail during power outages, torrential down pours, or faulty air conditioning lines during a heat wave.
FIRE DAMAGE:
Caused by use of alternate emergency heat sources, sprinkler systems that fail due to freezing pipes, downed power lines, or environmental conditions leading to a structure fire.
WIND DAMAGE:
Caused by falling trees and limbs, damage to siding and roofs, and downed power lines of course most of these hazards don't happen in isolation. Tornadoes and violent thunderstorms put property owners at risk for water, fire, and wind damage. It's important to understand which hazards might affect your property and your family, and then take the proper steps to prepare.

Environmental Cleaning and Disinfection Recommendations!
3/13/2020 (Permalink)
There is to much learn about the novel coronavirus that causes (COVID-2019). Based on what is currently known about the virus, spread from person-to-person happens most frequently among close contacts (within about 6 feet). This type of transmission occurs via respiratory droplets. Transmission of novel coronavirus to persons from surfaces contaminated with the virus has not been documented. Transmission of coronavirus in general occurs much more commonly through respiratory droplets than through fomites. Current evidence suggests that novel coronavirus may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. Cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses in community settings.
This guidance provides recommendations on the cleaning and disinfection of rooms or areas of those with suspected or with confirmed COVID-19 cases. It's aimed at limiting the survival of novel coronavirus in key environments. These recommendations will be updated if additional information becomes available.
These guidelines are focused on community, non-healthcare facilities, schools, institutions of higher education, offices, daycare centers, businesses, and community centers that do not house persons overnight. These guidelines are not meant for cleaning staff in healthcare facilities or repatriation sites, households, or for others for whom specific guidance already exist. Thanks to you Beverly/Cape Ann Customers!
Thank you Beverly/Cape Ann for helping us achieve this prestigious honor! The following announcement appeared in The Beverly Patch and reads as follows:
The Beverly Patch
Posted Jul 19, 2018 at 7:10 PM
The following Beverly-area business received awards at the recent SERVPRO convention, held at Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Fla., from June 25-29.
This and other high-performing franchisees were recognized during an Awards Extravaganza at the annual event, which was attended by nearly 3,000 owners, key staff, and corporate representatives.
- Vincent LaGrassa and Antonio LaGrassa, owners of SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann, received the Director’s Bronze award.
“Running a small business is a challenge,” said Sue Steen, chief executive officer of SERVPRO Industries, Inc., “And SERVPRO understands that. Our annual convention gives us the opportunity to recognize our top performing franchises while we provide each of our individual franchisees with the tools, knowledge and group experience they need to help them excel at building their businesses. Our business owners are an extraordinary group of entrepreneurs. When they succeed, it does more than enhance SERVPRO’s reputation as an industry leader in disaster cleanup, restoration, and remediation services. It also ensures that these dedicated professionals have the tools they need to provide world-class service to their customers and their communities.”
The Awards Extravaganza event was the highlight of a convention packed with learning opportunities. This year’s event theme, “Bring the Brand to Life,” represented the four main areas of focus that help add life to any brand: serve the customer, build the brand, management and leadership. The theme was a thread running through the 70 breakout sessions and three general sessions available to the franchise owners and key team members in attendance.

Countdown to the Holiday Season: Preparing Your Home
10/12/2018 (Permalink)
It’s hard to believe it’s almost December. The pumpkin spiced lattes, UGG’s, sweater weather, comfort food and many more fall things we <3 are all back and we love it. Soon enough Thanksgiving will be a memory and Christmas will be upon us.
The holiday season is one of the most wonderful times of the year and we all love to indulge a bit and that may include traveling. But, the holidays are also a busy season of burglaries. November and December are known to have nearly 400,000 burglaries according to the FBI. Apparently holiday travel + presents under the tree = a burglar’s dream come true. So if you’re planning to take a trip this season be sure to try and be proactive and give the following some thought to keep your home safe.
- Do Not Tell the Internet
We over-share everything. Social media trains you to do this. Posting pictures at this time on this date with this person. It’s habit for some people. But we should all take note this year and try to hold off. Or if you want maybe just switch off location services on social apps and sites and hold off on posting your vacation pics until you’re back at home. If you simply can’t wait until you’re back to share, adjust your social media settings so only your close friends and family can see your updates.
- Post a Sign
Another easy way to keep burglars away from your home is to post security and surveillance signage around your house. About 60% of burglars indicated that the presence of a home alarm system would cause them to seek an alternative target altogether. Make your home look like it’s tough to break into and many burglars won’t even try.
- Use your neighbors
Your neighbors can be a great asset when trying to keep your home safe while you’re gone. If you’re planning a trip, ask neighbors you trust to collect your mail and keep a general eye on things for you.
- Schedule your lights
Another great way to make it look like someone is home is to put your lights on a schedule. Very simple to have your lights go on with apps on your phone or even on a timer.
- Keep your gifts to yourself
If you’ve been doing a lot of holiday shopping and have purchased big ticket items, be discrete when you throw away the packaging. Don’t put empty television boxes or Tiffany’s bags on the curb for everyone to see. On that same note, don’t post about all your shiny new toys online – burglars have Facebook too.
- Security cameras
In this time and day you can do almost anything at any time thanks to technology. One last simple piece of advice is to set up a security camera so you can see a live view of your home.

Memorial Day

Honoring those who have served
Did you know?.......Fun Facts & Trivia
- There is a National Moment of Remembrance established by Congress which asks all Americans to pause each Memorial Day for one minute at 3pm (the time when most of us are stuffing our faces with hamburgers and hot dogs!)
- Decoration Day was established in the 19th century to decorate the graves of soldiers who died during the Civil War. Eventually, it became a remembrance of all brave military men and women, and by 1967 the day was legally changed to Memorial Day.
- The first Decoration Day became extra memorable when James Garfield stepped up to the podium at Arlington National Cemetery in 1868. In the blistering heat, the future President's speech lasted 1 1/2 hours during "a spring day too warm for comfort," observed the New York Times.
- Bringing attention to Vietnam War POW's and MIA's, the "Rolling Thunder" of motorcycles first arrived in Washington DC during Memorial Day Weekend in 1988. Today, more than a million riders and spectators converge on the capital in what has become the world’s largest single-day motorcycle event.

Back To Routine
9/21/2016 (Permalink)
School is officially back in session! The summer may have come to an end, but thankfully the nice weather is hanging on for us! Be sure to take advantage of the warm temperatures while they last!
September is not only the month everyone goes back to school but it is also National Preparness Month.
Different types of disasters and emergencies happen in communities across the country, but there are key steps that every household can take to be better prepared for them. Kids learn what to do at school so why not have some sort of plan at home? Discuss how to prepare and respond to emergencies that can happen at home, work, and school.
Some tips include;
- Make a clear plan of what to do in an emergency and in case of an evacuation.
- Identify clear roles for everyone in the house.
- Make a list of all the important things you may forget when in an emergency.
- Have a disaster kit assembled for everyone in the house.
- Have an out of the area emergency contact person saved on a smartphone.
- Sign up for emergency alerts
Practice evacuating your home twice a year, especially if you have kids, infants, people with disabilities and seniors that may all need special considerations while planning for an emergency. This makes it a routine and can make a real emergency situation less stressful.
We wish all of you the best of luck this school year, both in sports and academically.
Summer Safety
7/14/2016 (Permalink)
Don't Burn your meal... or the house
