Spring Can Deliver Severe Surprises
6/19/2024 (Permalink)
As we saw in the last week of March of this year, the Northshore of Massachusetts can bring some crazy fluctuations of weather and temperatures. Spring usually brings warmer weather, longer days, and a much-anticipated break from winter it can also bring a very real threat of severe weather. We happen to be lucky where our weather doesn’t reflect the South’s, where they have a “Tornado Alley” during the spring weather, but due to the frequent change in cold and warm temperatures in spring in the New England area there is an elevated risk for severe weather. The weather can Range from flooding rains, thunderstorms, and sometimes tornadoes. Spring weather can be unpredictable at best and extremely dangerous at worst.
SERVPRO of Beverly/ Cape Ann is always ready to help!
When you give some thought to the types of hazards a spring storm could produce, you can begin to plan for the safety of your family as well as your home or business depending on where you live. here are some of the ways a spring storm might damage your home or business:
Water damage:
Can be caused by flooding from melting snow, the state of your foundation, washouts from coastal storms, frozen pipes that burst, sump pumps that fail during power outages, torrential down pours, or faulty air conditioning lines during a heat wave.
FIRE DAMAGE:
Caused by use of alternate emergency heat sources, sprinkler systems that fail due to freezing pipes, downed power lines, or environmental conditions leading to a structure fire.
WIND DAMAGE:
Caused by falling trees and limbs, damage to siding and roofs, and downed power lines of course most of these hazards don't happen in isolation. Tornadoes and violent thunderstorms put property owners at risk for water, fire, and wind damage. It's important to understand which hazards might affect your property and your family, and then take the proper steps to prepare.

No contracts are involved and it is at no cost to you or your business. We locate all the emergency numbers you may need and emergency action checklist for a step by step on what to do in a disaster. We also have provided the necessary utility shut off locations for all the gas, electric, heat, water and other important locations to know and understand how to turn them off. Time is of the essence in cases of emergency, so it is important to act fast to eliminate anymore disaster from occurring. By having a plan of action, you can readily be prepared and act in a timely manner, and limit the amount of time you as a company are inactive. Not only does the ERP save you time, but money as well. We obtain all your insurance information so you have it readily available at your convenience as a mobile app also. When Flooding Occurs
1/16/2024 (Permalink)
Be careful to take certain precautions after the storm has passed. Damage to your home can have a dramatic emotional impact, and it's best to have a plan before the storm strikes for how to reenter your home. Having a plan, and being aware of certain risks, will minimize the threat of harm to you or your family after the storm.
Keep these after the storm tips in mind:
- Make sure that you have current identification. You may have to pass through identification check points before being allowed access to your home/neighborhood.
- Avoid metal fences and other metal objects near downed lines.
- DO NOT use matches in a storm ravaged area until all gas lines are checked for leaks (keep flashlights and plenty of batteries at hand).
- Stay tuned to local news organizations, such as a radio or television station, for important announcements, bulletins, and instructions concerning the storm area.
- Remember that, after the storm, you may not have immediate access to your home. Emergency rescue crews, power crews and other personnel may be attending to special needs. Roads could be blocked; power lines could be down, and people may be trapped and in need of assistance.
- Use a camera or camcorder to record thoroughly any damage done to your home before any repairs are attempted.
- In certain areas, the flooding rains that accompany a storm can create pest problems. Be aware of potential pest problems in your area, such as mice, rats, insects or snakes that may have "come with the storm".
- Make sure that you have current identification. You may have to pass through identification check points before being allowed access to your home/neighborhood.
- Avoid driving as roads may be blocked after the storm.
- Avoid sight-seeing or entering a storm ravaged area unnecessarily. You could be mistaken for a looter.
- Avoid downed power lines even if they look harmless.
- Avoid turning the power on at your home if there is flooding present. Have a professional conduct a thorough inspection first.
- Consider having professionals/licensed contractors inspect your home for damage and help in repairs. This includes electricians, as well as professionals to inspect gas line, remove uprooted trees and check plumbing.
- Remember that downed or damaged trees can contain power lines that can be a hazard after the storm.
- Telephone lines will likely be busy in the area; use a phone only for emergencies.
- Flooding brings with it the risk of waterborne bacterial contamination.
- After the storm you should assume that the water is not safe and use properly stored water or boil your tap water.
These are just a few ideas to think about before and after a severe storm hits. Remember to keep your radio tuned to a station by issuing emergency bulletins and updates with the latest information.
We often only focus on the before when it comes to storms (you can see our tips for before the storm) but knowing what to do after is just as important.
Water Cleanup in Your Basement

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your basement could flood, including:
- A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
- Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
- Storm sewer backup
- Sanitary sewer backup
- Foundation drainage failure
- Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
- And many more

Hurricane Season is Here
6/22/2023 (Permalink)
Exterior maintenance is an important part of your commercial building's storm preparedness plan alongside proper staffing procedures and medical supplies. Having the building maintained up to code can help it withstand the power of Essex County storms and minimizing damage. Storms can happen any day of the week so preparing now can help to ensure that the building stays in safe conditions. Here are some examples of practices that will help in the long run:
Unblock and Clear Drainage
A proper up to code building should include a well-maintained drain system from the roof to the street. It should consist of elements such as:
- Drains
- Gutters
- Downspouts
- Roof slopes
These elements work together to take rainwater from the building's roof to the ground where it can drain properly. If the water pools and does not drain properly, it can seep through cracks and crevices causing much more serious problems to the structure. You should also ensure the drain system is in good condition by removing any blockage and fixing any existing damage.
Secure or Remove Loose Outdoor Articles
As part of your exterior maintenance, you should also consider any separate items that are around the building that could possibly brake or become a piece of destruction to your business’s structure. Some of these objects can include potted plants, tables, chairs, trash cans and signs. Powerful winds can move these types of items around and not only cause damage to your property, but also to others. Ensure you have enough room to store these items or if you have larger structures like trailers, dumpsters, and portable restrooms, make sure they can be anchored to something that will not break under the stress of storm winds.
Shutter or Board-Up Glass
Glass surfaces such as windows, skylights and glass doors are obviously vulnerable to the impact of debris. Their destruction can create further water damage and can even endanger your staff and or patrons. Make sure there are exterior shutters or covers ready to protect these items from the elements. If you are not prepared for an unexpected storm front, and you lack the long-term protection needed, grabbing some supplies from your local hardware stores (i.e.-plywood sheets, screws, etc.) can also be a great way to protect the fragility of glass windows. Professional storm damage restoration is always an option after a storm has left damage, however, with proper exterior maintenance, and preparedness, you can help lessen or even deter the extreme effects.

What is Lurking in that Water Damage?
9/15/2022 (Permalink)
Did you know that there are all types of categories when it comes to water losses that happen in your home or business? Most usually have no idea what this would refer to, but from a mitigation and insurance standpoint, it’s a pretty big deal.
These categories of water loss determine the process necessary in cleanup, how dangerous they can be, and how to proceed.
There are three types of contamination:
Category 1
The first, Category 1, is sanitary water that typically comes from a broken pipe and doesn’t come in contact with any contaminants that could mix into it (i.e. a drain pipe, or sewer pipe from a toilet) and doesn’t pose a risk to your safety if you’re exposed to it but can still easily cause mold growth if not treated immediately.
Category 2
Second, Category 2 water contains significant amounts of contaminants that may cause harm to a person should they come in contact. Flooding from your washing machine into your home, aquariums, or punctured waterbeds. After just two days, Category 2 water damage can easily become a Category 3.
Category 3
Lastly is Category 3, where the water is heavily contaminated by sewage. If water comes in from a sewer drain in any way, or back flows from the drains in your home, it requires extreme levels of caution. Professionals should be wearing protective gear to clean up those messes.
Our team is trained to take these situations very seriously. We have a response time of 1 hour or less to start the mitigation process immediately to keep it from becoming worse and spreading. That is why we are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week because you never know when something as serious as a Category 3 water loss will happen.
Here are some tips when going through any category of water loss:
Water damages happen quite frequently, some of the most common causes that we see are from: failed supply lines from a toilet or fridge, water coming from outside the home, or leaks in a bathroom or HVAC system.
When experiencing a water damage in your home you should:
-Shut off the water
-Call your insurance agent and plumber
-Call SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann (978) 927-8665 to begin emergency services
When dealing with a water loss from a clean water source which is a Category 1 loss. Most of your building materials that are wet can be salvaged and restored to pre loss conditions, our team is trained to help dry and salvage important documents and items.
Helpful Tip
When shopping for a Homeowners Insurance policy, a good thing to consider is looking into a Flood policy. There have been many times that the cause of loss has been water from an outside water source and a regular home insurance policy does not cover flooding. Have an adjuster come out and help see if you are on a flood plain. Its always better to be safe than sorry!
Our team at SERVPRO of Beverly/ Cape Ann understands how stressful any type of loss can be. We pride ourselves on customer service and quick response times. All our technicians are background checked, drug tested, and are certified through the IICRC. Their certifications range from Water Restoration Technician, Applied Structural Drying, Commercial Drying Specialist, and Applied Microbial Remediation Technician.

Ice Dams, Are they Worth the Hype?
1/26/2022 (Permalink)
Ice Dams can cause major damage and happen in the coldest of months in New England
With such erratic temperatures in New England, especially living in the Northshore area of Massachusetts, Ice Dams can wreak havoc on your roof, eventually leading to interior damage! If your home should ever come under the damage to this type of ruin, SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann is always here to help! Give us a call at (978) 927-8665.
What is an Ice Dam you say? An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas. Moisture entering the home from ice dams can lead to the growth of mold and mildew. Nonuniform roof surface temperatures lead to ice dams.
Factors Leading to Ice Dams:
- Heat loss from a house, snow cover and outside temperatures interact to form ice dams.
- Freezing Temperatures (below 32° Fahrenheit) with snow on roof that is not cleared off.
- The snow on a roof surface that is above freezing will melt. As water flows down the roof it reaches the portion of the roof that is below 32F and freezes. This causes the ice dam.
- The dam grows as it is fed by the melting snow above it, but it will limit itself to the portions of the roof that average below 32F. So, the water above backs up behind the ice dam and remains a liquid.
This water finds cracks and openings in the exterior roof covering and flows into the attic space. From the attic it could flow into exterior walls or through the ceiling insulation and stain the ceiling finish. SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann knows how to trap and extract the water left behind and mold from previous ice dams that were previously unseen and not delt with. How do nonuniform temperatures on the roof surface help create these pockets of water?
Heat from the House:
Heat from the house travels to the roof surface in three ways: conduction, convection, and radiation.
- Conduction is heat energy traveling through a solid. A good example of this is the heating of a cast iron frying pan. The heat moves from the bottom of the pan to the handle by conduction.
- If you put your hand above the frying pan, heat will reach it by the other two methods. The air right above the frying pan is heated and rises. The rising air carries heat/energy to your hand. This is heat transfer by convection.
- Heat also transfers from the hot pan to your hand by electromagnetic waves and this is called radiation. Another example of radiation is to stand outside on a bright sunny day and feel the heat from the sun. This heat transfers from the sun to you by
Convection and radiation heat transfer can be reduced by adding insulation. This will make the top surface temperature of the insulation closer to surrounding attic temperatures directly affecting convection and radiation from this surface.
Other Sources of Heat Loss:
- Heat Loss from Leakage
- Exhaust Systems
- Chimneys
All these different ways that lead to nonuniform temperatures should always be checked out by the professionals. Anyone on the roof during the winter or performing work on the roof from below risks injury and may cause damage to the roof and house. Whenever a house is tightened up, ventilation systems, exhausting devices and combustion devices must have enough air to operate safely and effectively. But when these factors go unseen always know that SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann has your back with the clean up and restoration of your home during the coldest of months. What is Lurking in that Water Damage?
9/2/2021 (Permalink)
If you’ve ever had a flood in your home, you may have heard the term “category” followed by a number. For most homeowners, that doesn’t really mean a whole lot, but from a mitigation perspective, it means a whole lot.
Categories of water determine the process necessary to clean up and how careful you should be in dealing with the mess.
Three Types of Contamination
Category 1
There are three categories of water that can infiltrate your home or business. The first, Category 1, is sanitary water that typically comes from a broken pipe and doesn’t come in contact with any contaminants that could mix into it. It doesn’t pose a risk to your safety if you’re exposed to it but can still easily cause mold if not treated immediately.
Category 2
This water contains significant amounts of contaminants that may cause harm to a person should they come in contact. Flooding from your washing machine into your home, or aquariums, or punctured waterbeds. This water could already harbor bacteria and shouldn't touch your skin and should quickly be taken care of to prevent further issues. After just two days, Cat 2 water damage can easily become a Category 3.
Category 3
This water is heavily contaminated by sewage. If water comes in from a sewer drain in any way, or back flows from the drains in your home, it requires extreme levels of caution. Toxins and pathogens are extremely harmful to humans and pets and should be treated with the utmost care. Professionals should be wearing protective gear to clean up those messes.
Our expert team takes these situations very seriously. We have a response time of 1 hour or less to start the water damage repair process to keep it from spreading and worsening. We’re available 24/7 to protect your home, you, and your family.
Water Loss Tips
Water damages happen quite frequently, some of the most common causes that we see are from: failed supply lines from a toilet or fridge, water coming from outside the home, or leaks in the home bathroom.
When experiencing a water damage in your Essex County home you should first:
-Shut off the water
-Call your insurance agent
-Call SERVPRO of Beverly/ Cape Ann at (978) 927-8665 to begin emergency services
When dealing with a water loss from a clean water source which is considered to be a Category 1 loss. Most of your building materials that are wet can be salvaged and restored to preloss conditions. We have the ability to dry and salvage important documents due to water loss.
Helpful Tip
When shopping for a Home Owners Insurance policy a thing to consider is looking into a Flood policy. There have been many times that the cause of loss has been water from an outside water source. In result the insurance policy didn’t cover the loss and the owner was responsible for the cost.
Click the IICRC link to learn more about these certifications.

Cleaning Up the Mess After a Flood and Sewer Damage
9/16/2019 (Permalink)
Bathroom Water Loss
Cleaning up areas of your home after flooding and sewer damage is awful no matter what, but cleaning up the bathroom can be especially tedious. If you ever face a sewage backup in your bathroom, there are a few things that are helpful to know to speed proper cleanup and ensure a safe and sanitary home in Beverly, MA.
1. Call for Help
If you suspect you have damaged sewer lines, call your sewage company to schedule an inspection. To protect your home from future mold or rot issues after a toilet overflow, call flood damage remediation experts. Only with the help of professional water removal specialists can you rest assured that floodwater has not crept into places you can’t see to wreak havoc.
2. Dry the Area
Though you may be tempted to sanitize your bathroom immediately after a toilet overflows, you should not do so before you start drying out the affected area. Whether you are dealing with a flooded toilet or an entire flooded basement, the first thing you should do is utilize heavy duty vacuums, drainage systems and fans to remove all the water.
3. Sanitize
After drying the area, sanitize it as best you can. Floodwater resulting from sewer damage can be toxic, so be thorough in your cleaning processes. Once the area is dry from the first round of sanitizer, you should plan to disinfect it one more time.
4. Dehumidify
The presence of excess water in a bathroom often welcomes lingering humidity, which only encourages mold growth in spaces affected by sewer water. During the process of drying, sanitizing and restoring, you should be sure that a dehumidifier is always running.
Cleaning up the aftermath of sewer damage doesn’t have to be a nightmare. By getting a head start on the problem and calling in the professionals, you can have your home clean and dry again in no time.

There are a number of reasons why your basement could flood, including:
- A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
- Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
- Storm sewer backup
