Odor In your Home
3/25/2024 (Permalink)
Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potential permanent problems.
As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard to reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

It’s hard to believe it’s almost December. The pumpkin spiced lattes, UGG’s, sweater weather, comfort food and many more fall things we <3 are all back and we love it. Soon enough Thanksgiving will be a memory and Christmas will be upon us.
The holiday season is one of the most wonderful times of the year and we all love to indulge a bit and that may include traveling. But, the holidays are also a busy season of burglaries. November and December are known to have nearly 400,000 burglaries according to the FBI. Apparently holiday travel + presents under the tree = a burglar’s dream come true. So if you’re planning to take a trip this season be sure to try and be proactive and give the following some thought to keep your home safe.
- Do Not Tell the Internet
We over-share everything. Social media trains you to do this. Posting pictures at this time on this date with this person. It’s habit for some people. But we should all take note this year and try to hold off. Or if you want maybe just switch off location services on social apps and sites and hold off on posting your vacation pics until you’re back at home. If you simply can’t wait until you’re back to share, adjust your social media settings so only your close friends and family can see your updates.
- Post a Sign
Another easy way to keep burglars away from your home is to post security and surveillance signage around your house. About 60% of burglars indicated that the presence of a home alarm system would cause them to seek an alternative target altogether. Make your home look like it’s tough to break into and many burglars won’t even try.
- Use your neighbors
Your neighbors can be a great asset when trying to keep your home safe while you’re gone. If you’re planning a trip, ask neighbors you trust to collect your mail and keep a general eye on things for you.
- Schedule your lights
Another great way to make it look like someone is home is to put your lights on a schedule. Very simple to have your lights go on with apps on your phone or even on a timer.
- Keep your gifts to yourself
If you’ve been doing a lot of holiday shopping and have purchased big ticket items, be discrete when you throw away the packaging. Don’t put empty television boxes or Tiffany’s bags on the curb for everyone to see. On that same note, don’t post about all your shiny new toys online – burglars have Facebook too.
- Security cameras
In this time and day you can do almost anything at any time thanks to technology. One last simple piece of advice is to set up a security camera so you can see a live view of your home.

Ice Dams

Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester By-The-Sea residents: make SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann your winter storm damage restoration company! Call us at (978) 927-8665
Ice Dams form when snow or ice accumulates on the surface of your roof, causing a “dam” at the edge of an in-insulated part of a roof, such as an overhang or eve. As the heating system heats the home and attic space throughout the day, snow and ice begin to melt from the heated areas and drips off the roof.
Though beautiful, icicles form and begin to build up ice on the edge of the uninsulated part of the roof. Beneath this top layer, water runs down into the gutter, refreezes, and then continues, over time, to cause a large amount of ice buildup over the top of the gutter. Water then starts to pool on your roof and seep back under your shingles, metal roofing or any other roofing system.
As the ice melts again, it seeps into your attic and eventually comes through areas of the structure, resulting in water damage. This can cause damage to drywall, insulation, and framing materials. It can also be an incubation point for mold inside the wall cavity or external walls, ceiling, and even the attic. It can even potentially cause dry rot to the framing materials and reduce the structural integrity of the structure. It can also result in wet building materials that can start to have a strong musty odor.
Ice dams can cause a large amount of damage to a commercial or residential structure. They can cause mold damage and even dry rot. If ice builds up too much it can even rip off rain gutters from the weight of the ice.
Here are a few easy preventative measures to reduce the potential for ice dams:
- Check the attic for proper insulation.
- String waterproof electric heat tape through your gutters to keep them from freezing and building up with ice.
- Keep the snow off your roof. If snow is building up on your roof, get it shoveled off to eliminate the melting of the bottom layer.
If you have any questions about ice dams, water damage or mold feel free to Call SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann at (978) 927-8665.
Storm Readiness

Storm Preparedness Plan For Your Business
Exterior maintenance is an important part of your commercial building's storm preparedness plan alongside proper staff procedures and medical kits. Having the building maintained up to standards can help it withstand the power of Essex County storms and minimize damage. Before such event takes place, ensure that the building includes the following elements and practices.
Unblocked and Clear Drainage
A business building inspection should include a well-maintained drain system from the roof to below. It should consist of elements such as:
- Drains
- Gutters
- Downspouts
- Roof slopes
These elements work together to take rainwater from the building's roof to the ground. If the water accumulates on top, it can either seep through the cracks and damage your property or cause the roof to break completely, leaving the area vulnerable. You should also ensure the drain system is in great condition. Remove any blockage and fix any existing damage.
Secured or Removed Loose Accessories
As part of your exterior maintenance, you should also consider any separate items that are around the building that serve your business. Some of these objects include tables, chairs, trash cans and signs. A powerful storm can move them around and crash them against your location or other people's properties. Ensure you have enough room to take the items inside. If you have larger structures like trailers, dumpsters and portable restrooms, you can anchor them to the ground or to fixtures using rope or chains.
Shuttered or Boarded-Up Glass
Glass surfaces such as windows, skylights and glass doors are vulnerable to the impact of high winds and debris. Their destruction creates further water damage and even endangers staff. Make sure there are exterior shutters and covers ready to protect these items from the elements. If the storm is coming soon and you lack shutters, board up these surfaces to reduce the damage.
Professional storm damage restoration can always help bring your establishment back to normal. However, with proper exterior maintenance, you can mitigate the negative effects.

Frozen Pipes
Extreme cold weather can cause pipes to freeze and burst. In general, pipes are more likely to freeze when the temperature is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The resulting water damage can be extensive. Outdoor pipes and pipes in unheated areas of the home can freeze if they are not properly insulated or if temperatures are severely cold. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals can quickly and safely repair water damage caused by frozen pipes.
Outdoor pipes most likely to freeze include:
- Outdoor hose bibs
- Swimming pool supply lines
- Water sprinkler lines
Pipes in unheated or partially heated areas are also at risk of freezing, including:
- Basements
- Crawl spaces
- Garages
Ice Dams
An ice dam is formed when snow melts unevenly on a roof and refreezes into a dam at the edge of the roof, near the eaves. This dam prevents any further snowmelt from draining off of the roof. This standing water can back up under shingles, leak into a home, and cause significant water damage to ceilings, walls, and other areas. Ice dams can also tear off gutters and loosen shingles.
Roof Damage
Snow and ice can cause significant damage to your gutters and roof. The additional weight of snow and ice can even cause a roof to collapse. When there’s a cold snap, water can get into cracks and small spaces and expand when it freezes, causing larger cracks and more damage. The repetition of freezing and thawing cycles can cause small cracks to get larger.

What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a mineral fiber that occurs in rock and soil.
Where can asbestos be found?
Because of its fiber strength and heat resistance asbestos has been used in a variety of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire retardant. Asbestos has also been used in a wide range of manufactured goods, mostly in building materials (roofing shingles, ceiling and floor tiles, paper products, and asbestos cement products), friction products (automobile clutch, brake, and transmission parts), heat-resistant fabrics, packaging, gaskets, and coatings.
Where asbestos may be found:
- Attic and wall insulation produced containing vermiculite.
- Vinyl floor tiles and the backing on vinyl sheet flooring and adhesives
- Roofing and siding shingles
- Textured paint and patching compounds used on walls and ceilings
- Walls and floors around wood-burning stoves protected with asbestos paper, millboard, or cement sheets
- Hot water and steam pipes coated with asbestos material or covered with an asbestos blanket or tape
- Oil and coal furnaces and door gaskets with asbestos insulation
- Heat-resistant fabrics
- Automobile clutches and brakes
How can you be exposed to asbestos?
Asbestos fibers may be released into the air by the disturbance of asbestos-containing material during product use, demolition work, building or home maintenance, repair, and remodeling. In general, exposure may occur only when the asbestos-containing material is disturbed or damaged in some way to release particles and fibers into the air.
Advice from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection:
"If asbestos containing material is in good condition, the best thing you can do is leave it alone."
Unfortunately, the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards says removal of some amount of building materials in necessary in a high percentage of our jobs due to contamination.
Possible Health Risks
Three of the major health effects associated with asbestos exposure are:
- lung cancer
- mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that is found in the thin lining of the lung, chest and the abdomen and heart
- asbestosis, a serious progressive, long-term, non-cancer disease of the lungs
What does that mean for you when working with us?
If we are removing any amount of building materials from your home, said building material need to be tested for asbestos levels before the materials are removed from your home.
What does this mean for your project?
It means we are "on hold" with your project temporarily. We contact an Industrial Hygienist, who will contact you, our customer, to come to your home to perform the appropriate testing. The Industrial Hygienist will take samples of the material we are looking to remove, and they are sent to a local lab. The turnaround time for results are about 2-3 business days and if there is any in the materials, an outside asbestos abatement company needs to be brought in who will provide an estimate for you (and your insurance company) and will ultimately perform the asbestos abatement.
The reasons for the multi steps are simple:
- if we skip this step, the fine from the MA DEP reaches into the thousands of dollars.
- If say a saw is used on drywall or joint compound to remove the drywall, and your furnace is turned on, this asbestos articulates now become airborne and spread like seeds of a dandelion in a light breeze. You are now breathing in this dust, and the dust is airborne leading to more dangerous absorption into your lungs.
So, when you’re dealing with an emergency that requires dealing with the removal of questionable building materials and insulation use the company in your community who cares what happens to you and yours. We believe in staying safe and keeping you and your family safe from the unseen hazards of problematic material removal. We will help deal with getting in contact with the correct agencies to test and correctly remove asbestos containing material. How To Protect Your Business From Storm Damage
1/24/2023 (Permalink)
A flooded building can wreak havoc on your business operations. If flood water is a real concern in the Beverly, Wenham, Hamilton, Essex, Manchester, Gloucester, or Rockport areas, it is important to do what you can now so that your business property is better protected later. Here’s how you can protect your property from water damage.
Preparing your building
Before a floor even occurs, you can take steps to seal your building from water. Start by applying a waterproof coating to the exterior walls. Several other steps are also important.
- Install waterproof shields over windows and doors where possible.
- Strengthen walls to stand against the pressure of flood water or flood debris.
- Seal all areas where utilities enter the building.
- Anchor the building if necessary.
Protecting the lower levels
Inspect your basement and the first floor to ensure there is no areas where flood water can easily enter premises. Regrade any land that slopes into your property, extend, or redirect gutter spouts and repair any cracks in the walls. Move any valuable equipment or furniture to higher ground and create digital backups of any important paper documents.
Taking other safety measures
Water damage is not the only thing to worry about during flooding. It is also important to properly anchor any fuel tanks to prevent the water from sweeping them away, which can cause the lines to break and fires or explosions to happen. Sewer backflow valves are also important.
Preparing for restoration
No matter how well you prepare your building for a flood, at least some damage is still likely to occur. Call SERVPRO of Beverly/ Cape Ann 978-927-8665

Storm Preparedness: Plan for Your Business
9/18/2022 (Permalink)
Exterior maintenance is an important part of your commercial building's storm preparedness plan alongside proper staffing procedures and medical supplies. Having the building maintained up to code can help it withstand the power of Essex County storms and minimizing damage. Storms can happen any day of the week so preparing now can help to ensure that the building stays in safe conditions. Here are some examples of practices that will help in the long run:
Unblock and Clear Drainage
A proper up to code building should include a well-maintained drain system from the roof to the street. It should consist of elements such as:
- Drains
- Gutters
- Downspouts
- Roof slopes
These elements work together to take rainwater from the building's roof to the ground where it can drain properly. If the water pools and does not drain properly, it can seep through cracks and crevices causing much more serious problems to the structure. You should also ensure the drain system is in good condition by removing any blockage and fixing any existing damage.
Secure or Remove Loose Outdoor Articles
As part of your exterior maintenance, you should also consider any separate items that are around the building that could possibly brake or become a piece of destruction to your business’s structure. Some of these objects can include potted plants, tables, chairs, trash cans and signs. Powerful winds can move these types of items around and not only cause damage to your property, but also to others. Ensure you have enough room to store these items or if you have larger structures like trailers, dumpsters, and portable restrooms, make sure they can be anchored to something that will not break under the stress of storm winds.
Shutter or Board-Up Glass
Glass surfaces such as windows, skylights and glass doors are obviously vulnerable to the impact of debris. Their destruction can create further water damage and can even endanger your staff and or patrons. Make sure there are exterior shutters or covers ready to protect these items from the elements. If you are not prepared for an unexpected storm front, and you lack the long-term protection needed, grabbing some supplies from your local hardware stores (i.e.-plywood sheets, screws, etc.) can also be a great way to protect the fragility of glass windows. Professional storm damage restoration is always an option after a storm has left damage, however, with proper exterior maintenance, and preparedness, you can help lessen or even deter the extreme effects.

Make an Emergency Plan:
Make sure everyone in your household and Business knows and understands your emergency storm plan. The best way to familiarize yourself and others with a plan is to have a meeting or brainstorming session to answer these questions:
- How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
- What is my shelter plan?
- What is my evacuation route?
- What is my family/household communication plan?
- Do I need to update my emergency preparedness kit?
- Check with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)and update my emergency plans due to Coronavirus. Get masks (for everyone over 2 years old), disinfectants, and check my sheltering plan.
Consider the specific needs of your household when making an Emergency Plan and be sure to include:
- Different ages of members within your household
- Responsibilities for assisting others
- Locations frequented
- Dietary needs
- Medical needs including prescriptions and equipment
- Disabilities or access and functional needs including devices and equipment
- Languages spoken
- Cultural and religious considerations
- Pets or service animals
- Households with school-aged children

Be a Good Neighbor:
Be one of the good guys and check on those in your neighborhood that might need some extra help during a storm emergency. Check with neighbors, senior adults, or those who may require extra help if there is need to be evacuated from the area. It only takes a little action to help those in need. Prepare a Neighborhood wide plan to make sure everyone is safe a prepared for Hurricane/Storm Season.
Supplies:
Build an Emergency Preparedness Kit with essential supplies incase Evacuation from your home or business is imminent:
- Water (one gallon per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation)
- Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food)
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
- Flashlight
- First aid kit
- Extra batteries
- Whistle (to signal for help)
- Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)

Consider adding the following items to your emergency supply kit based on your individual needs:
- Masks (for everyone ages 2 and above), soap, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes to disinfect surfaces

Evacuation:
You may have to evacuate quickly due to a hurricane if you live in an evacuation zone. Learn your evacuation routes, practice with your household and pets, and identify where you will stay. Follow the instructions from local emergency managers, who work closely with state, local, tribal, and territorial agencies, and partners. They will provide the latest recommendations based on the threat to your community and appropriate safety measures.
When dealing with weather:
- Determine how best to protect yourself from high winds and flooding.
- Take refuge in a designated storm shelter or an interior room for high winds.
- Go to the highest level of the building if you are trapped by flooding. Do not climb into a closed attic. You may become trapped by rising flood water.
- Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. Turn Around. Just six inches of fast-moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
To make an evacuation less stressful, plan and strengthen your home by de-cluttering drains and gutters, bring in outside furniture. If your home or business is in a frequent hurricane path, try to consider hurricane shutters or have plywood to be able to board up windows on hand.
We at SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann are here 24/7 for your storm/water/fire damage needs call us today at (978) 927-8665 or https://www.SERVPRObeverlycapeann.com/
Returning Home:
- Pay attention to local officials for information and special instructions.
- Be careful during clean up. Wear protective clothing, use appropriate face coverings or masks if cleaning growth or debris. People with asthma, lung conditions and/or immune suppression should not enter buildings with indoor water leaks or growth that can be seen or smelled, even if these individuals are not allergic to it. Children should not help with disaster cleanup work.
- Wear protective clothing and work with someone else.
- Do not touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water. If it is safe to do so, turn off electricity at the main breaker or fuse box to prevent electric shock.
- Do not wade in flood water, which can contain dangerous pathogens that cause illnesses. This water also can contain debris, chemicals, waste, and wildlife. Underground or downed power lines also can electrically charge the water.
- Save phone calls for emergencies. Phone systems often are down or busy after a disaster. Use text messages or social media to communicate with family and friends.
- Document any property damage with photographs. Contact your insurance company for assistance.

Beverly, Rockport, Gloucester, Hamilton, Essex: Prepare for Spring Severe Weather
3/22/2022 (Permalink)
Prepare Now for Spring Severe Weather
Local SERVPRO disaster recovery professional alerts Beverly, Rockport, Gloucester, Hamilton, and Essex property owners that “billion-dollar storms” are becoming more frequent
According to the National Weather Service, March marks the start of the spring severe weather season: “…three months of danger that can imperil the unprepared.”
Data published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reveals that severe weather events are becoming more frequent and more devastating, said Tony Lagrassa, a disaster recovery specialist with SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann. NOAA reports that the period from 1980-2021 saw an annual average of 7.4-billion-dollar weather and climate events (adjusted to today’s costs). When they looked at only the five most recent years (2017-2021), the annual average grew to 17.2 events. Last year alone (2021) delivered 20 “billion-dollar” weather or climate disaster events.
“It’s not unusual to see severe weather in the spring,” says Lagrassa “Whenever you have warm, moist air colliding with cool, dry air, you have the conditions for creating a thunderstorm, along with the possibility of lightning strikes, floods, hail, high winds, rip currents, and even wildfires and tornadoes. The problem is, you can’t prevent these severe weather events and you can’t predict very far in advance when and where they will hit. The only sensible approach is to take steps in advance to protect your family and property, especially as these disasters become more common.”
Lagrassa urges the Beverly, Rockport, Gloucester, Hamilton and Essex area home and business owners to check out state and federal resources online for tips on planning and preparing for a severe weather emergency now, as the spring severe weather season arrives. One such resource is the National Center for Environmental Health of The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which offers suggestions for creating an emergency kit and preparing family members for severe weather emergencies at https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/features/springweather/index.html.
“Each year, SERVPRO professionals across the country respond to scenes of weather-related mayhem, helping families and business owners recover from flooding, fire, wind damage and more,” said Lagrassa. “While we are standing by to help whenever we are needed, we hope that our neighbors in the Beverly, Rockport, Gloucester, Hamilton and Essex area will heed this warning from the CDC: ‘…prepare for storms, floods, and tornadoes as if you know in advance they are coming, because in the spring, they very likely will.”

Basement flooding can happen from many factors
A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall, and extreme weather. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and normally built partly or entirely below ground level. SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann can help you if flooding plagues your basement. Why does it happen so frequently in this area? There are several reasons why your basement could flood.
- A blocked or failed sewer pipe.

- Water supply-line break or a hot-water tank failure.
- Sump pump failure
- Storm surges with high winds

Ice Dams and their Hidden Damage
2/4/2022 (Permalink)
Storms in New England can lead to Ice Dams...
The Great Bombogenesis of 2022

The most sought after accoutrements of a blizzard
Preparing for a winter storm is never fun, but always a necessity. It should seem like a “no-brainer” but we at SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann always wants to remind you to be prepared and to stay safe during such times. This weekend seems to be turning out to be one of those very many times. Heavy snow and wind and low temperatures are on their way, and we will always be here for the aftermath. Our 24/7 Emergency Services will get to you quick to alleviate some of the hassle of possible storm damage. SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann (978) 927-8665
As we brace ourselves for the next Nor’easter that will be inevitably hitting us this weekend with high winds and heavy snow fall one must ask: Is this going to be one of those Bomb Cyclones? What is a Bomb Cyclone, and is it the same as Bombogenesis? Do I need a root cellar to ride this cyclone out like Dorothy and is this the return of Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel together again?!
Of course, we would love Genesis to magically do a revival concert, but Bombogenesis has nothing to do with the sweet sounds of the original members of that group. Bombogenesis is a real event that happens when a beautiful symphony of atmospheric dynamics accumulate to yield an intense meteorological “bomb.” A dip in the jet stream, known as a trough, will energize a nascent surface storm that will rapidly intensify to create a Bomb Cyclone. This event will dump tons of snow and blast everything with high winds. When this horribly cold type of weather apocalypse happens, and you need help with the aftermath (frozen pipes, ice dams, clean up, etc.) call SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann (978) 927-8665.
Stay Healthy, Prepared, Safe and don’t forget the milk, bread and toilet paper when you’re rushing out to that packed grocery store this Friday. And remember that we will always be ready for any horrendous aftermath that should happen. Call us at (978) 927-8665
Prepare Before the Winter Storm Season
12/1/2021 (Permalink)
During a winter storm, remember to stay out of the way of plows so they can clear streets for emergency vehicle access.
Winter storms create a higher risk of car accidents, hypothermia, frostbite, carbon monoxide poisoning, and heart attacks from overexertion. Winter storms including blizzards can bring extreme cold, freezing rain, snow, ice, and high winds. Before New England gets inundated with a heavy stormy winter, make sure you are ready so SERVPRO® of Beverly/Cape Ann doesn’t have to come save you from those unfortunate incidents that come along with freezing temps and extreme weather.
Be Aware!
- Pay attention to weather reports and warnings of freezing weather and winter storms.
- Listen for emergency information and alerts.
- Check on Older/ Elderly Adults that might need some extra help.
- Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radioalso provide emergency alerts.
Prepare!
- Prepare your home to keep out the cold with insulation, caulking and weather stripping. Learn how to keep pipes from freezing.
- Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups.
- Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication. Remember the needs of your pets.
- Have extra batteries for radios and flashlights. If you are unable to afford your heating costs, weatherization, or energy-related home repairs, contact the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)for help.
Stay Safe During Winter Weather
- Stay off roads if, at all, possible. If trapped in your car, then stay inside.
- Limit your time outside. If you need to go outside, then wear layers of warm clothing. Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
- Reduce the risk of a heart attack by avoiding overexertion when shoveling snow and walking in the snow.

Include These Elements in Your Building's Storm Preparedness
9/13/2021 (Permalink)

Ice Damns and Their Hidden Damages?

ICE DAMS AND HIDDEN DAMAGE
Ice Dams form when snow or ice accumulates on the surface of your roof, causing a “dam” at the edge of an in-insulated part of a roof, such as an overhang or eve. As the heating system heats the home and attic space throughout the day, snow and ice begin to melt from the heated areas and drips off of the roof.
Though beautiful, icicles form and begin to build up ice on the edge of the uninsulated part of the roof. Beneath this top layer water runs down into the gutter and then refreezes then continues over time to cause a large amount of ice build up over the top of the gutter.
Wet building materials can start to have a strong musty odor as well.
Ice dams can cause a large amount of damage to a commercial or residential structure. They can cause mold damage and even dry rot. If ice builds up too much it can even rip off rain gutters from the weight of the ice.
Here are a few easy preventative measures to reduce the potential for ice dams:
1.Check the attic for proper insulation.
2.String waterproof electric heat tape through your gutters to keep them from freezing and building up with ice.
3.Keep the snow off of your roof. If snow is building up on your roof, get it shoveled off to eliminate the melting of the bottom layer.
If you have any questions about ice dams, water damage or mold feel free to call SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann:978-927-8665.

Be careful to take certain precautions after the storm has passed. Damage to your home can have a dramatic emotional impact, and it's best to have a plan before the storm strikes for how to reenter your home. Having a plan, and being aware of certain risks, will minimize the threat of harm to you or your family after the storm.
Keep these after the storm tips in mind:
- Make sure that you have current identification. You may have to pass through identification check points before being allowed access to your home/neighborhood.
- Avoid metal fences and other metal objects near downed lines.
- DO NOT use matches in a storm ravaged area until all gas lines are checked for leaks (keep flashlights and plenty of batteries at hand).
- Stay tuned to local news organizations, such as a radio or television station, for important announcements, bulletin, and instructions concerning the storm area.
- Remember that, after the storm, you may not have immediate access to your home. Emergency rescue crews, power crews and other personnel may be attending to special needs. Roads could be blocked, power lines could be down and people may be trapped and in need of assistance.
- Use a camera or camcorder to record thoroughly any damage done to your home before any repairs are attempted.
- In certain areas, the flooding rains that accompany a storm can create pest problems. Be aware of potential pest problems in your area, such as mice, rats, insects or snakes that may have "come with the storm".
- Make sure that you have current identification. You may have to pass through identification check points before being allowed access to your home/neighborhood.
- Avoid driving as roads may be blocked after the storm.
- Avoid sight-seeing or entering a storm ravaged area unnecessarily. You could be mistaken for a looter.
- Avoid downed power lines even if they look harmless.
- Avoid turning the power on at your home if there is flooding present. Have a professional conduct a thorough inspection first.
- Consider having professionals/licensed contractors inspect your home for damage and help in repairs. This includes electricians, as well as professionals to inspect gas lines, remove uprooted trees and check plumbing.
- Remember that downed or damaged trees can contain power lines that can be a hazard after the storm.
- Telephone lines will likely be busy in the area; use a phone only for emergencies.
- Flooding brings with it the risk of waterborne bacterial contamination.
- After the storm you should assume that the water is not safe and use properly stored water or boil your tap water.
These are just a few ideas to be thinking about before and after a severe storm hits. Remember to keep your radio tuned to a station issuing emergency bulletins and updates with the latest information.
We often only focus on the before when it comes to storms (you can see our tips for before the storm here) but knowing what to do after is just as important.

Preparing For A Storm

A flooded building can wreck havoc on your business operations. If Flood Water is a real concern in the Area, Its important to do what you can now so that you business property is better protected later. Here's how you can protect your property from water damages.
PREPARING YOUR BUILDING
Before a flood even occurs, you can take steps to seal your building from water.
Inspect your basement and first floor to ensure there are no areas where flood water can easily enter the premises. Regrade any land that slopes into your property, extend or redirect gutter spouts and repair any cracks in the walls. Move any valuable equipment or furniture to higher ground and create digital backups of any important paper documentation.
TAKING OTHER SAFETY MEASURES
Water damage is not the only thing to worry about during a flooding.

Beverly and Cape Ann Area Residents: Introducing our TES trailer

The SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann TES trailer
Let us help provide temporary heat where you need it!
Do you need your home or business heated during a power outage?
Eliminate the possibility of frozen pipes, water damage, mold damage and other related damages with a simple fix. Call us and we will deliver and set up our TES trailer to have you back up and running with heat in no time!
There are many situations to use this magical trailer. We recently used it for a multi-unit residential building to aid in drying some of the materials and contents.
During last winter's storms it was used to stabilize a home from further water damage during a period of power outage and sub zero weather. Had the trailer not been set up to heat this home, the house, materials and contents would have never dried. The entire home would have resembled a frozen snowball. And when this is the word used to describe your home, that is not good!
Let us provide temporary heat where you need it. Protect your investment!

Storm Ready?
As John Wooden says, "Confidence Comes From Being Prepared".
Preparing for Winter Weather around The North Shore can be a full time job. One thing that would be a help would be an Emergency Kit to have on hand for storm situations. Winter Storm Safety Tips
11/14/2018 (Permalink)
Winter Storm Safety Tips
Winter storms in New England can range from freezing rain and ice, to a moderate snowfall over a few hours, to blizzard conditions with blinding wind-driven snow that can last several days. What Are Winter Storms?
Winter storms can include large snow accumulation, extremely cold temperatures, coastal flooding, beach erosion and heavy, wet snow or ice.
Why Prepare?
Extreme winter weather can shut down an entire region. It can lead to roof collapses, communications disruptions and power outages. Winter storms are associated with storm-related deaths caused by:
- Automobile accidents
- Heart attacks due to overexertion
- Freezing to death; and
- Carbon monoxide incidents
To minimize the dangers associated with winter storms, take the proper safety precautions to protect yourself and your family.
Winter Storm Watches and WarningsThe National Weather Service issues watches and warnings for winter storms and blizzards to alert the public of potential winter storms. It is important to understand the difference between these warnings so you know what to do to stay safe:
Winter Storm Watches
It is likely that winter storm warning, blizzard warning, or ice storm warning criteria will be met due to the conditions of an upcoming storm.
Winter Storm Warning
6” of snow or more in a 12-hour period (or 8” of snow or more in a 24-hour period) expected within next 12 to 36 hours.
Blizzard Warning — Sustained wind gusts greater than or equal to 35 mph AND considerable falling and/or blowing snow, resulting in reduced visibility of less than 1/4 mile for at least three hours.
Ice Storm Warning — ½ inch or more of freezing rain.
Before a Winter Storm- Be informed by receiving alerts, warnings, and public safety information before, during, and after emergencies. Download the Massachusetts Alerts app.
- Create and review your family emergency plan.
- If you receive medical treatments or home health care services, work with your medical provider to determine how to maintain care and service if you are unable to leave your home for a period of time.
- Assemble an emergency kit. Add seasonal supplies to your emergency kit, such as extra winter clothing and blankets.
- Follow instructions from public safety officials.
- Prepare for possible power outages.
- Fully charge your cellphone, laptop, and other electronic devices before a storm if power outages are expected.
- Consider purchasing a generator to provide power during an outage. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and learn how to use it safely before an outage.
- Prepare your home for possible emergencies.
- Remove dead or rotting trees and branches around your home that could fall and cause injury or damage.
- Clear clogged rain gutters to allow water to flow away from your home. Melting snow and ice can build up if gutters are clogged with debris.
- Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working and have fresh batteries.
- Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year.
- Make sure your home is properly insulated. Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows to keep cold air out. Install storm windows or cover windows with plastic from the inside to provide insulation.
- Ensure you have sufficient heating fuel and consider safe backup heating options such as fireplaces or woodstoves.
- Ensure your vehicle is ready for safe winter driving. Keep the gas tank at least half-full and have a Winter Emergency Car Kit in the trunk.
During a Winter Storm- Minimize outdoor activities. Drive only if it is absolutely necessary. If you must drive, utilize MEMA’s winter driving safety tips.
- Keep your pets safe with Winter Pet Safety Tips.
- Dress for the season to protect against the elements. Dress in several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing instead of a single heavy layer. Outer garments should be tightly woven and water repellent. Wear a hat, mittens (not gloves) and sturdy waterproof boots to protect your extremities. Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs.
- During extreme cold weather, follow our extreme cold safety tips.
- Watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
After a Winter Storm- Continue to monitor media for emergency information.
- Follow instructions from public safety officials.
- Call 9-1-1 to report emergencies, including downed power lines and gas leaks.
- Check with your local authorities or call 2-1-1 to find locations of warming centers or shelters near you or for other storm-related questions.
- In the event of power outages during cold weather, you may need to go to a warming center or emergency shelter to stay warm. Report power outages to your utility company.
- Stay away from downed utility wires. Always assume a downed power line is live.
- Stay off streets and roads until they are clear of snow.
- Use caution and take frequent breaks when shoveling snow to prevent overexertion. Overexertion can bring on a heart attack—a major cause of death in the winter.
- Clear exhaust vents from direct vent gas furnace systems to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure your carbon monoxide detectors are working as it is a silent, odorless, killer.
- Clear snow from around vehicle exhaust pipes before starting the vehicle to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Make sure emergency generators or secondary heating systems are well ventilated because their fumes contain carbon monoxide. See more Generator Safety Tips.
- Dig out fire hydrants and storm drains in your neighborhood.
- Check your roof and clear accumulated snow to avoid roof collapses.
- Don’t park too close to corners so public safety vehicles and plows can maneuver safely.
- Be aware of children playing in the streets, particularly climbing on or running out from behind large snowdrifts. Parents should remind their children to be aware of plowing operations and traffic.
- Be a good neighbor. Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly, those who live alone, those with medical conditions and those who may need additional assistance.

After the Storm: Important Tips - SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann
10/16/2018 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann for any After the Storm Clean ups you may have!

Are you aware of Ice Damns and their Hidden Damage?

Infrared photo of hidden ice damage
Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester by the Sea residents:Make SERVPRO of Beverly/Cape Ann your winter storm damage restoration company! Call us:978-927-8665ICE DAMS AND HIDDEN DAMAGE
